What is orange fluff?
The history of this refreshing dish dates back to the 1950s when it was first served at BBQs and church gatherings. This light, but filling dessert features cottage cheese mixed with orange jello that’s popular during the summer months in America.
There are many different variations for it, but this one is my particular favorite. This dish only takes about 5 minutes to make.
It may look complicated or time-consuming, but don't worry – orange fluff salad really couldn't be much easier.
What should I know before making this orange fluff recipe?
This orange salad recipe tastes its best after it has been in the fridge for a day. This is because it has time to soak up all the flavors.
If you want to make the best of this delicious recipe, experiment with ingredients one at a time so that each flavor can be enjoyed in its purest form. Plus, by going through all possible variations and seeing which ones work for your taste buds; we're pretty sure no matter what you will find one that you love.
Ingredients in Orange Fluff
This salad takes very few ingredients, but don’t forget you can add or remove a couple of these to make it your own.
- Orange Jell-O
- Whipped Cream (low-fat)
- Cottage Cheese (low-fat)
- Mini Marshmallows
- Coconut for that added flavor (save some to use as garnish)
Can I use Instant Pudding in Fluff Salad?
You could possibly swap out the cottage cheese for vanilla instant pudding, but this might make it thinner, higher in points, and much higher in sugar content. Some prefer it this way, but it’s not a healthy substitution. So, while you can use instant pudding in fluff salads, I wouldn’t suggest it.
If you like the way the consistency is with pudding opt for low fat and zero sugar pudding so you will still have a healthier great tasting dessert.
Is Orange Fluff a dessert or salad?
There is a bit of fun controversy around this question. Orange fluff has “salad” added in the name most of the time. However, it’s also considered a dessert.
The way to determine whether a recipe is actually called “fluff salad” or not has been debating chefs and dietitians for years, but there doesn't seem be any agreed-upon standard. We'll leave that up in the air with our answer.
The closest thing we can come up with as an alternative would simply define it by its ingredients: All sweet desserts typically consist mainly of sugar; delights often include things such lemon juice (or other citrus fruit), vanilla flavor extract) plus whipped cream if desired
So we will call it a delight because it is delightful to our tastebuds.
Can you make Orange Fluff Salad Ahead of Time?
Yes, you can make orange fluff in advance. In fact, I highly suggest it so that you get the best flavor from this dish. This recipe can easily be prepared and stored overnight in the refrigerator. The orange mandarins might provide additional moisture to this salad, so just stir it in again before serving. And last but not least enjoy.
How do I serve Orange Fluff Salad?
What is more satisfying than our delicious orange fluff salad? This scrumptious dessert will leave your mouth watering and desiring just one more bite. It's perfect as both an appetizer and a dessert, it is a great dish to take to potlucks and family gatherings.
You can swap out the orange jello for another flavor to switch things up or even match a theme. If you do this, you’ll want to swap out the oranges and use the fruit that matches the jello flavor.
- Jell-o fluff can be stored in the fridge for up to a week. You’ll want to cover it with plastic wrap when storing it or it will dry out. Do not freeze.
- If you store it in the fridge for at least a day, the flavor has a chance to really soak in and it’s truly the best.
- You’ll want to stir it well after storing it as some of the liquid will migrate to the top. Stir well before serving.
- The marshmallows will get much gooier when refrigerated. Don’t be alarmed, this is ok and, in my opinion, makes a better consistency.
- Swap out various jell-o flavors to change up the entire flavor of the salad. Go nuts 🙂
- Other popular add-ins are sour cream, yogurt, fruit cocktail, chopped pecans etc.
